Have you ever heard of a mystery vacation? A mystery vacation is when you don’t actually know where you’re headed. You just go. That’s what I’m doing this week.
I’m writing this on Friday. We’ve packed up our bikes, camping gear, credit cards and clothing that will have to get us through every adventure from hiking to going to the opera. We’re off first thing in the morning. The rules: we head west and don’t stop until we find warmth and water. There is no set stopping point, though we’ve discussed a few options (Galiano Island, Kelowna, Cannon Beach, Ore.). Nothing is set in stone.
We did this once before about three years ago. That first mystery vacations remains one of my favourite trips of all time. We left the city in a June snowstorm and stopped in the sunny Shuswap in 28-degree temps. We camped, went on wine tastings, read books by the beach, caught up on sleep. I’d never stayed in that area of the country before and I soaked in up like a sponge (biking to wineries — yes, please!).
Wish us luck! I’ll let you know where I end up.
