Things We Like Fridays

Hello gang!

What an odd week. It feels very strange to be blogging only three days a week, though we both appreciated the extra downtime. Thanks for all the kind messages — it feels wonderful to know that so many people make us a part of their daily routine.

And a warning: we’re switching things up again this upcoming week. Because of Monday’s holiday, we’ll blog Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday. In the meantime, we’re off on a few great adventures for the weekend. Chris is going to Banff for a wedding. (Two years ago this weekend, she and S got married! It was a day much like today — except for a brief rain/hail storm. Apparently, rain means wealth is coming to the couple. Chris is still waiting on that one. Michelle is home from fitness camp and will see how her sore muscles do at X-Fest this weekend.

Now, onto the good stuff…

  • Free People opens at Chinook Centre this morning! The first 40 customers to arrive will receive Free People iPhone cases and anyone who makes a purchase will be entered into a raffle to win a $150 gift card. Plus, they’ll be serving cupcakes by Cupcake Fetish all day long.
  • Have you heard of Polica? Chris can’t stop listening and plans to listen to them non-stop all the way to Banff. (Fact: they’re Jay Z’s favourite indie band, too.)
  • Chris bought a tee from Gap’s pure body collection this week. Why did no one ever tell us about this line? The fabric is so soft that it’s like being naked.
  • We heard the first snow reports from Sunshine Village this week, which reminded Chris of this photo. That can’t be real, is it?
  • Awesome new wine discovery: Black Chook Shiraz/Viognier. (We had to look it up. A chook is an Aussie insult for a chicken. Go figure.)

PS – About the photo, Chris is only lifting her dress so high because mud was splattering everywhere! Her shamelessness at that moment is kind of embarrassing.

Leather Skirts

Let me make this clear: I am not ready for the end of summer. Nope. Nada. They’ll have to pry my hands off the last patio umbrella in the city when the time comes.

But I’ll give you one beautiful thing about autumn — the ability to leather pencil skirts. Whoa, Nellie. I’m in love. I lucked out a few months ago and found a perfect vintage one for $7 — I know! — at a local secondhand store. After spending five times that amount on dry cleaning, my leather friend is ready to meet the world. It’s very similar to this Jason Wu number except mine cost $1,670 fewer dollars.

PS – You know who else makes gorgeous leather skirts? Calgary’s Caitlin Power.

Happy Belated Blog Birthday To Us

On July 22, 2010, we wrote our first blog post, to little fanfare. We shared it with some family and friends and thought we’d see how this blogging thing would go. Well, our second birthday just passed — oops, we forgot — so we thought we’d take the belated birthday opportunity to thank our readers, supporters, family and friends for following us, promoting us, sharing us and keeping us sane.

Since October 2010, we’ve updated the blog Monday to Friday, save for stat holidays and Christmas breaks. And, with every day since then, we’ve seen our hits grow, our readers get more vocal (we love your comments!) and our opportunities multiply. We’ve loved every moment.

Today, though, we’re announcing a slight shift in how we do things at Toque Girls. From now on, we’ll be posting on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays — not Tuesdays and Thursdays. The change comes from a very simple desire: to have more down time in our lives. Between jobs, writing assignments, a marriage (Chris), dating (Michelle), workouts, travels and all the rest of it, we are a wee bit busy these days. We love the Toque Girls blog — and love sharing it with you — but we’re taking a little time for ourselves.

So, we’ll see you Wednesday and then on Friday for our regular Things We Like Fridays post. Till then, we leave you with the first photo we ever posted of the two of us, from December 2010. Thanks for all of your support!

Things We Like Fridays

Hola, amigos. Manana voy a Mexico. I’m (Michelle) getting into Spanish mode, as I will be checking out an incredible fitness resort and spa, Rancho La Puerta, in Tecate, Baja California, Mexico, for the next few glorious days. I don’t know what it’s like to go to Mexico and not overdose on chips, guacamole and margaritas, so this will be a refreshing adventure. I fully expect to be this chick next week (if I can get myself out of bed in time for the early morning hikes). Can’t. Wait.

For my part (Chris), I’m taking it easy. I’m planning to hit up a few farmers markets and make something like this for Sunday. Wish me luck because I’m taking my road bike out for the first time since I hurt my foot.

On to things we like!

  • Dreams do come true. Remember hearing about Project Loretta? It’s happening! Hayley and her mom, Loretta, will be flying to Niagara Falls at the end of August to meet Keith Urban and catch his show. Thanks to everyone who watched the video and helped spread the word!
  • If you haven’t seen Evil Dead The Musical, you have until September 8 to catch it at Calgary’s Pumphouse Theatre. One word: amazing.
  • If you’re planning to be in Calgary on Sept. 7, check out this concert by the CPO. It’s only $20!
  • Michelle is onto the final pages of John Irving’s latest book, In One Person, and she doesn’t want it to end. If you enjoy Irving (A Prayer For Owen Meany is still one of Michelle’s all-time faves), you should check this one out.
  • Also on the reading list, Toque Girl fave  Jonathon Tropper’s new book came out this week. Tropper never disappoints.
  • And more reading, Hadley Freeman, one of Chris’ favourite writers, gives her take on the “legitimate rape” controversy. She nails it.
  • Peleton Cycling is offering a fantastic deal on three months of cycling classes. It’s a very good way to get through the shoulder season in between biking and skiing. (Egad! Are we already talking about that?)
  • Have you heard about the new documentary on Dieppe? It’s amazing. Even if you’re not a history buff, you’ll be caught up in this story. Chris watched the whole thing twice in two days. She did most of her Masters research at the National Archives featured in the film.
  • Chris received plenty of compliments on her eye makeup this week. Here’s the secret.

Have a great weekend!

My Achilles and Switching Things Up

I haven’t blogged about anything personal recently because I’ve been a bit of a grump. Here’s what’s going on: three weeks ago, I injured my Achilles tendon. I’ve been off running, hiking, biking ever since and it’s going to be a long, slow recovery. Let me me tell you, you don’t realize how important that little tendon is at the back of the ankle until it doesn’t work anymore.

Here’s the game plan: I’m trying to focus on doing more weight workouts (in a non-explosive, non-ankle stressing kind of way, my dear physiotherapist) and swim workouts. It’s been 20 years since I was swim team and the only training routine I knowbwell is swimming lengths over and over. So I’ve been using pinterest to find pool workouts. A few of my favourites: pool running (although little kids look at you like you’re as crazy as a can of peas), this freestyle series and sprint training.

There you have it. So if you see a weird girl running back and forth in the community swimming pool, come over and say hi.

PS – Check us out on pinterest. I’ve put together a good collection of workouts and recipes!
